A Smile is Only the Beginning

I want to start by saying how truly saddened it makes me to see all of these articles on the internet about bullying and it leading to suicide, in very young children no less. So much unnecessary and unneeded pain coming from the sharp tongues of those far too young to be harvesting such hate. Childhood is meant to be a place where the only worry should be "What should I imagine today?" But school-age bullies aren't the only reason that I'm in distress. Anybody putting down anyone else because of income, race, clothing choices, any color on the body (skin/hair/eye color), nationality, what someone believes, who someone loves, or what political party someone is part of has me wondering "Where has the humanity gone?" And I'm not preaching for you, reader, to believe a certain way or accept a certain issue. My only goal is to advocate a little bit of compassion from one human being to another for the mere reason that we are all the same, each of us with a living soul and a beating heart that pumps the same feelings throughout our veins. This is why I have started this blog.
Kindness is one of the easiest things to do in the world. Whether it's giving a compliment, hugging someone who needs comfort, or just smiling at a stranger who appears low on his luck; you can make someone feel wonderful and in turn make YOU feel amazing, much more amazing than if you were to put someone down. Don't believe me? Give it a try for yourself.
And the first challenge I shall give you is: to smile. Smile at everyone one you recognize, smile at those that help you (hold the door open, tell you 'Bless you' when you sneeze, or pick up something that you dropped), smile at the working people who serve you (the barista who made your coffee, the cashier who rang up your grocery list, the mailman as you get your mail, etc.), and smile at anyone who looks glum or upset. Such a simple act can turn someone's day around, including your own.
Remember that life is hard on everyone, and adding to the weight of someone else's does nothing but make life that much harder on both of you. Aim for amiability and you'll land in a better world. And with that, I end on a smile :)
